Fund raising lectures in Gloucestershire

Dr Russ Thompson will be giving two talks in March. one at Marling School, Stroud and the other at Sir Thomas Rich's, Gloucester, entitled Antarctica: heroism, discovery, inspiration. He will be introducting the Antarctic explorers of the heroic age, recount his own experiences, and talk about the discoveries made in biology, glaciology, geology, climatology and ionospherics. It will provide an opportunity to hear first-hand about the highest, windiest, coldest continent on Earth from a man who knows it. The Marling talk is on Thursday 17th March and the Sir Thomas Rich's talk on Friday 18th March. Both begin at 7.30pm and are open to the public.

These are two talks in a series of events organised by Ken Gibson, a Trustee of the British Antarctic Monument Trust. Earlier this month Ken entertained a very enthusiastic audience from the Mushers Club who race huskies in the Forest of Dean. As a dog driver himself, Ken focussed on the techniques used in the Antarctic in the 1950s.
The mushers were so enthusiastic that Matt Hamersley, who is planning to race in the Yukon Quest and Iditrod Trail 1000 next year has suggested that we run a fund-raising husky race through the forest. It would be perhaps four miles with a stop half way to put up a pyramid tent and make a brew!
The next races are at the end of February, but if any Fid would be interested in taking part, please contact us. The meets attract a lot of local publicity on radio and in the newspapers and a race such as this would attract more.
The mushers are very active throughout the UK and the races are exciting. And for any Fid who knows the sound of huskies barking in excitement will be immediately trasported back forty years or so at the sound of 50 huskies straining at their harnesses at the off. As Ken left at midnight they were all singing to the moon. "What a sound!"
